You may not know this but the United States of America has a new President. That’s right. His name is Barack Obama and he is now the most powerful human in the universe after taking over from that most famous of fools and thieves George W. Bush. Unlike Bush he seems to be a decent guy and I am happy to say that he likes his science fiction.
Obama appears to be a fan of Star Trek. He told an audience in Wyoming, “I grew up on Star Trek, I believe in the final frontier.” Original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, revealed, “About a year and a half ago I was at a political event and one of our current campaigners for the office of President of the United States saw me, approached, and gave me the Vulcan signal… It was not John McCain.”
Newsweek reported on a remark he made about an item of wife Michelle’s wardrobe, “That’s an interesting belt buckle. Dilithium crystals! Beam me up, Scotty!”
Barack also knows a lot about superheroes, telling Entertainment Weekly, “I was always into the Spider-Man/Batman model. The guys who have too many powers, like Superman, always made me think they weren’t really earning their superhero status. It’s a little too easy. Whereas Spider-Man and Batman, they have some inner turmoil. They get knocked around a little bit.” However, he did once make a Green Lantern gaff, flipping heck.
With great power comes great responsibility Obama, ya hear me?
Unfortunately, all his geek credentials take a tumble when one discovers he is a big fan of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter. Oh well, no hero is invincible.
