Michael Crichton, the best selling author and creator of ER, has died of cancer aged 66. His books have sold more than 150 million copies and he is most famous for novels which have been adapted into major films, including Jurassic Park, Congo and Disclosure. Filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who directed the blockbuster film version of Jurassic Park said, “He was the greatest at blending science with big theatrical concepts, which is what gave credibility to dinosaurs again walking the Earth.”
Crichton’s best known novels are Odds On, The Andromeda Strain, The Great Train Robbery, Congo, Jurassic Park, Disclosure, The Lost World, Timeline, State of Fear and Next.
I must confess that I have never read any of Crichton’s novels. Like Dan Brown and Stephen King, he is one of those ridiculously popular authors whose novels are made into films even before they are written. The studios seem to rely on the name rather than the quality. His novels could be brilliant or they may be crap, I am yet to discover.
I did like the original film version of The Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park is alright but I recently watched Timeline, starring Anna Friel, Michael Sheen, David Thewlis and Billy Colony, it was appalling.
