Foreign Directions

How do you give instructions and directions to someone who does not speak English? With great difficulty, that’s how.

“Excuse, I help need.”
“Sorry, I have no spare change or cigarettes.”
“No, I bus need in Tower Hill.”
“You need a bus to Tower Hill?”
“Yeez.”
“The buses that go from this stop do not go to Tower Hill.”
“Tower Hill bus, yeez.”
“You cannot get a bus to Tower Hill from here. You need to take the Underground or walk.”
“I need take bus.”
“But you cannot from here.”
“Please, my English is very little.”
“Aye, my English is very little an’ all.”
“Need want bus in Tower Hill.”
“You cannot get a bus to Tower Hill from here, understand?”
“Yeez, Tower Hill.”
“OK, take the 25, you’ll be fine. Bye.”
“Yeez, thank you, Tower Hill.”

The number 25 does not go to Tower Hill but I was too exasperated to explain. At least I did not send them in totally the wrong direction like usual. It must be the mischievous side of my nature.
