Clarke RIP

I was rather sad to hear of the passing of author and scientific visionary Arthur C. Clarke. The Somerset born writer, inventor and futurist has passed away, aged ninety, in his Sri Lankan home. He is most famous for the novel ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. I’d say Kubrick’s film of the novel is my favourite film of all time.

I do like his work. Being a big science fiction fan I enjoy reading a novel of startling scientific ideas. Clarke offers an optimistic view of science empowering mankind’s exploration of the solar system.

Much of his work features a technologically advanced but prejudiced mankind being confronted by a superior alien intelligence. This encounter produces a conceptual breakthrough that accelerates humanity into the next stage of its evolution.

Novels to read:
The Odyssey series
The City and the Stars
Childhood’s End
Rendezvous with Rama

To quote the author:
“The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.”
