Whilst in the cinema waiting for Cloverfield to begin I was greatly anticipating the trailers. I was expecting to see the teaser trailer for the upcoming Star Trek film. Cloverfield is produced by J.J. Abrams, who has also directed the eleventh Star Trek film, due in cinemas in December. Disappointedly, there was no trailer.
Don’t worry too much though because I have already seen it. You too can catch it on youtube.
It is only about 30 seconds long. It shows a huge construction site, with helmeted welders and flying sparks. In the background one can hear scratchy news commentary of various major off earth achievements, such as “Godspeed John Glenn” and “One small step for mankind”.
The camera pans up and we see a partially built saucer section of the Enterprise, with gaping holes and workers welding sheet metal onto the hull. The nacelles just look like two giant fan units. Then the voiceover begins.
“Space the final frontier,” says Leonard Nimoy, slowly and deeply. We then cut to the film’s logo; an old style Starfleet insignia. We hear the sound of an original transporter beam. And it is over.
I can’t wait.
