Pip-Eyed Views

“I just don’t get it Nel, what is it with modern music? It all sounds the same and the bands all look stupid. Listening to the radio makes me feel broken.”
“I know Pip, but there are some great new bands around. What about CSS, The Cribs or Foals?”
“No, you’re wrong, they’re all rubbish.”

Pip is yet again expressing his usual antipathy with the world of modern rock, pop and indie. “I just know I’m right and everyone else is wrong.” I tell him not to be silly. Trying to change the subject I mention that there are a couple of Nelson Galaxy rough mixes on MySpace.

“Yeah, I’ve heard ‘em, they’re alright.”
“Just alright Pip? They are outstanding. You are definitely wrong this time.”
“Well, it’s just I don’t like music anymore. The things I do like are good and everything else is just rubbish.”
“Whatever Pip. You’ve turned into your dad.”

As I walk with him along Fleet Street I feel rather infuriated. Pip’s indomitable belief that he is always right brings me out in hives. It is fine to be opinionated but biased is galling. He is so contradictory though, next week he will be adamant that all new music is outstanding and expounding the virtues of his new favourite bands.

“And another thing Nel, what’s with the dressing in women’s clothes? It’s all a bit weird isn’t it?”
“Only to you Pip, no one else really cares. Anyway, they’re not women’s clothes, they are my clothes.”
“I have some great news though Nel.”
“Yeah, what is it?”
“I’ve just had a massive pay rise.”
“Well, whoopee flipping do.”

Can you remember that time, at your place, in that London when we had gone to see our A&R man at EMI and we got drunk and I was sick on my jumper and then we got lost and came out in Hives? Where is Hives?
    What’s a CSS?
